Zooxanthellae

Zooxanthellae refers to dinoflagellates that is involved in a symbiotic relationship with sponges, corals or clams. Like phytoplankton, they are able to make their own food from sunlight through photosynthesis.

The zooxanthellae provides their hosts with food, while the hosts provide protection and access to light. This symbiotic relationship enables them to survive in nutrient-poor waters.

If the corals undergo any environmental stress such as high water temperature, zooxanthellae may be expelled which causes coral bleaching, where the coral turns white.
