Grunts are a group of ray-finned fish under the Family Haemulidae. They are sometimes known as sweetlips, porkfish or pigfish. They are found in warm, tropical regions. Grunts are named as so for the pig-like noises they make using their pharyngeal teeth. This sound is usually made if they are under stress or threatened. Grunts or Haemulids normally consume shrimp, but their diet also consists of worms, bivalves and crustaceans. They are largely values by anglers, as they are favored among beginners as game fish.
They are also popular for commercial use and are widely used in cooking. Grunts almost resemble snappers, however, they lack canine-teeth. Some grunts are also known for their behavioral trait, in which they approach one another and "kiss". The purpose of this trait was suspected to be sexual or aggressive. However, there were no further studies on this.
