Groupers

Groupers have a large elongated body, with majestic looking fins. In Pulau Kapas, a particular spotted grouper is usually found roaming around the shallow reefs. They use their large mouths and strong body to ambush and capture prey.

Longfin grouper, also known as Ikan Kerapu Cicak is a type of grouper than can be found in the waters of Kapas. The Longfin grouper can be easily distinguished from other reef fishes by their roundish to hexagonal spots in varying shades of brown over their head, body and fins. They are carnivorous as they usually feed on crustaceans, worms and small fishes.

Spawning of groupers are seasonal and is dependent on the moon phase. Longfin groupers are solitary, and they usually hunt for prey in the night. They use their large mouths and strong body to ambush and capture prey. They are considered as one of the primary reef-resident predators.
